I like to challenge the norm. Break the rules. “Go where no one has gone before!” In October 2003 I came up with the radical concept of recreating a Ducati sportbike into a “chopper." I knew this would upset many of the Ducati purists. How dare I take an Italian motorcycle that epitomizes the thrill involved with passion and riding and convert it into a stretched out cruiser. But the idea of pushing the envelope of acceptability only made the challenge more tempting.
The whole concept began after I heard a silly rumor that Harley-Davidson was going to buy Ducati. It was a crazy thought. But it made me start to think, “Hmm, what if two dissimilar heritages were combined, what would the end result be?” The resulting computer illustrations were posted on my personal web page. The positive response I received truly surprised me. Enough so that I decided to make fantasy into reality and, thus, the "DesmoDevil" series of motorcycles was born.
Engineering and building the motorcycle were a challenge, as I felt it was essential that the bike have the cornering clearance, suspension, and handling characteristics needed to remind the rider that he/she was part of a motorcycle still connected with the famous Ducati racing traditions. I wanted the framework to be stronger and cleaner in design than the original. I wanted the bike to be lighter than the basis of its origins. I wanted the "DesmoDevil" to have the “heart and soul” of a Ducati while also retaining the design language of the Miguel Galuzzi original. And most importantly, I wanted the American statement of stance and profile to be instantly recognizable.
The "DesmoDevil" is different than any other motorcycle out there on the road. It draws an incredible amount of attention when it is in public from motorcycle and even non-motorcycle enthusiasts alike. Those that have ridden it and have experienced this response realize that to build something truly unique and eye-catching, sometimes you have to break the rules.
